MSFT Market Currents more »
  • 4:03 AM Microsoft (MSFT) files a complaint with European regulators that Motorola Mobility Holdings (MMI), with Google's (GOOG) support, is misusing patents, demanding unfairly high prices from device makers to use standard patents relevant to products like MSFT's laptops and Xbox game console. [Tech]
  • Wednesday 2:54 PM Amazon Web Services (AWS), which is now believed to pull in over $1B in annual revenue, is rolling out a service that allows developers to more quickly build apps relying on AWS. The service moves AWS beyond its traditional focus on nuts-and-bolts cloud infrastructure, and could be evidence Amazon (AMZN) plans to more directly compete with PaaS solutions such as CRM's Force.com and MSFT's Azure. [Tech]
  • Wednesday 12:30 PM Microsoft (MSFT) finds itself in a PR dust-up over yesterday's report from The Daily claiming Redmond will soon unveil an iPad version of Office. A spokeswoman claims the report is "based on inaccurate rumors and speculation," and says an image used isn't of a Microsoft product. But an editor for the paper argues otherwise, and says a working version of iPad Office was "demoed to us by someone at Microsoft." [Tech]
  • Wednesday 8:33 AM Nokia (NOK) next week will unveil a new, cheaper smartphone using Windows Phone (MSFT) software, Reuters reports. In addition to the new Lumia 610, Nokia will also unveil at the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona a global version of its high-end Lumia 900 phone, which AT&T (T) is scheduled to roll out in the U.S. [Tech]
  • Tuesday 12:32 PM Research In Motion (RIMM +1.1%) has rolled out a long-awaited software upgrade for the PlayBook, and (in spite of the PlayBook's meager sales) is also unveiling a splashy ad campaign to go with it. Meanwhile, rumors of new buyout interest (previously) from Microsoft (MSFT) are reportedly making the rounds, but RIM shares are only getting a slight lift this time. [Tech, M&A]
  • Tuesday 9:33 AM Microsoft (MSFT) will soon submit an iPad version of Office to the App Store for approval, The Daily reports, backing up  an earlier rumor. The iPad's rapid adoption (including in the enterprise) gives Microsoft incentive to support the platform, though doing so could affect the ability of Windows 8 tablets to differentiate themselves. [Tech]
  • Friday 6:47 PM Why is Cisco (CSCO) so concerned about Microsoft's (MSFT) acquisition of Skype? It's not just that Microsoft's Lync platform competes with Cisco's unified communications offerings. It's that Microsoft's plans to integrate Lync with Skype could pave the way for a platform that bridges corporate and consumer communications. Cisco can't afford to be shut out, hence its demand for "interoperability." [Tech]
